POW #5 Letter decoding
Saige Fogarty POW #5 11/7/18
POW #5
Process and Solutions-
Problem 1- ABB-A= DD
Solution 1- A=1, B=0, D= 9
For this process, there is only one solution that can be correct for this situation. For instance there is only one 3 digit number minus a 1 digit number that equals a 2 digit number.
Ex. 100- 1= 99
Problem 2- SS+EE= SST
Solution 2- S= 1, E= 9, T= 0
If there is a 2 digit number plus a another 2 digit number that has to equal a 3 digit number, that mean then the S has to start with 1 because you can’t have 2 digit numbers that are higher than 100. So S has to be 1 so therefore it will be somewhere in the 100s.
Ex. 11+ 99=110
Problem 3- AB+BC=ADE
Solution 3- A=1, B=8, C=5, D=0, E=3
To be able to figure out this one you need to have a one of those numbers be 18 of higher or it won’t work. For example if you took 18+81= 99 it wouldn’t work so you need 18 and one other number that will get you to a 3 digit number that is all different.
Ex. 18+85=103
Problem 4- Boo+Fun=Fest
Solution 4- F=1, B=8 or 9, O=3, U=5, N=4, E=0, S=8, T=7
For this one it was really challenging but once I understood what each of the letters i knew were it was a lot easier to do. So what I figured out for this problem is that F is always 1 because you wouldn’t be able to get one 3 digit number and the other 3 digit number be able to add up to a thousand number. So right away I knew that B had to either be an 8 or 9 and F had to be a 1.
Ex. 933+154=1,087
Problem 5- Math- ham= ETM
Solution 5- M=1, A=2, T=3, H=4, E=8
To be able to figure out this one we each had to create our own problem. Once I knew that almost all of my numbers are the same I know what to do right away. This one was challenging for me in the beginning but after I worked through a lot of my own I was able to create this one.
Ex. 1,234+154=831
Self- Evaluation- This POW was so much fun for me to do and now that I know that there is an extra credit one I will be doing it. I really enjoyed doing this POW even though it took me 2 days to complete but once I got the hang of it I knew what to do. If I were to keep doing POW’s I feel like I would want one that I understood like this or the Knights around the table. I think I did pretty well on this POW and can’t wait to do more.
