Written Reflection:
What did I know before beginning?
I knew that Día de los Muertos existed and that it was a time to celebrate someone in your life that has passed away. I also knew that it was a tradition in the Mexican culture.
How do I deal with death in my family?
When someone in my family passes away it is really difficult for our family because we know we will never see them again. It depends on who the person is like for my dad we each had our time that was rough.
What is Día de los Muertos?
Día de los Muertos is a celebration for people have passed into the spiritual realm. On November 1st, different families and friends gather in remembrance and prayer of their loved ones. This was believed to assist the lost on their journey through the spiritual realm.
Where did it originate?
It originated in Mexico and was created by the Colombian culture. Originally, it was celebrated on November 1st as the day to honor children and infants. And on November 2nd it was the day to honor adults. November 1st was called Día de los Inocentes Which means Day of the Innocents and Día de los Angelitos which means Day of the Little Angels.
Where is it celebrated?
It is mainly celebrated throughout Mexico, but people Mexican heritage often celebrate it also.
When is it celebrated?
Preparations begin October 31st and continue until the day of celebration on November 2nd.
How is it celebrated?
Families and friends of relatives who have passed over to the spiritual realm make the whole celebration a colorful welcoming for the passed. They use lots of flowers and paints to bring the celebration to life. It is common to see skulls being decorated, also candies, flowers, and food that the loved one who passed loved very much. Families create altars in their homes to welcome and remember the passed. Placed on these colorful altars is a sheet object or objects that the loved one cherished most. It is common to see food, creations, art, things they loved to do, and instruments that they loved. Among these objects and decorations is a picture of the loved one that has passed and maybe some other pictures of them doing what they loved. Another thing they could have on the altar is an obituary explaining to people who they are and what their lifestyle was like. Also, families and friends visit the grave of the loved one and decorate their grave stone.
Who did I honor?
I honored my father, Timothy J. Fogarty
How did I honor them?
I wrote an obituary that we already had describing how his life was and what he loved to do. Another thing I did was talk about what he did for a living and who his family was.
How was the overall experience of celebrating?
I feel like the overall experience was delightful because you were able to go back and remember what the times were with that loved one. It was fun to learn about how other cultures celebrated loss and what they did to celebrate it.
What am I taking away?
I take this experience as a learning opportunity to grow in new experiences. I loved looking at how other cultures celebrated certain things. It is unusual to me how the Mexican culture celebrates death rather than grieving over death. I loved seeing how they looked at positives of death and made a spiritual connection to it.
